What should an AI agent never be allowed to do to a fund record?

    Last reviewed: 18 September 2026

It should never commit a change that a person has not accepted, where that change feeds a capital account, a valuation of record, an LP statement, a regulatory filing or a legal document. It should never act outside a granted mandate, never delete or overwrite history, and never move data outside the environment your firm agreed to. Drafting anything is fine. Committing the things that others rely on is a human act.

The useful line is between proposing and committing. An agent that drafts a valuation memo, reconciles two sources and flags a discrepancy is doing work no one should want to do by hand. An agent that silently updates the valuation of record has crossed into a decision the firm owns.

The second line is history. Records should be additive. An agent may create a new version, never erase the previous one, because the previous version is what an auditor or an LP will ask about.

The third line is the boundary of the mandate itself. An agent asked to do something outside its scope should be refused by the system rather than trusted to decline.

    Frequently asked questions

Is this too conservative to be useful?

The bulk of the time cost in fund operations is in assembling, reconciling and drafting, not in the final click. Keeping the commit with a person removes very little speed and preserves the thing that makes the output defensible.

Who decides where the line sits?

Your firm, and it should be written down. Reasonable firms draw it in slightly different places. What matters is that the boundary is explicit and enforced by the system rather than by convention.

Can an agent send an email to an LP?

Only where a person has accepted the content. Communications an LP may rely on carry the same standard as reported figures.

What if an agent gets something wrong?

With an additive record and a mandate trail, the wrong output is visible, attributable and reversible. That is precisely why those two controls matter more than the model behind the agent.
