What is the difference between an analyst, associate and VP?

    TL;DR

Analyst does the work. Associate structures the work and manages the analyst. VP owns the deal or client relationship and reports up. Titles are the same across firms but responsibilities shift as you climb.

Analyst to Partner: what each role owns in the investment workflow. Reuben AI runs the same pipeline, diligence, memo and portfolio surfaces at every level.

    The roles

Analyst. Most junior. Pulls data, builds models, drafts memo sections, tracks the pipeline. Typically 2 to 3 years.

Associate. Middle. Structures workstreams, checks the analyst's work, drafts the full memo, runs diligence. Typically 2 to 3 years.

VP. Deal lead. Owns the process end to end, presents to IC, manages the client or founder relationship. Typically 3 to 5 years before principal.

    Quirks across firms

Banking uses analyst, associate, VP, director, MD. PE uses analyst, associate, senior associate, VP, principal, partner. VC often uses associate, principal, partner (many funds skip analyst). Titles alone are not enough. Ask what the day looks like.

How this shows up on the job

Most students underestimate how much the day-to-day changes between analyst and associate. The analyst executes. The associate owns quality. Getting comfortable with that shift is the first big career step.
