What is the difference between VC, PE and private credit?
TL;DR
VC buys minority equity in young, high-risk, high-growth companies. PE buys majority control of mature, profitable companies. Private credit lends money to companies. All three are private markets but the deal, the returns and the day job are quite different.
The three side by side
Venture capital. Minority equity in startups. Long time horizon. High failure rate. Returns come from a few big winners.
Private equity. Majority (often 100%) buyouts of mature, profitable companies. Financed with debt. Returns come from operating improvement, multiple expansion and debt paydown.
Private credit. Loans to companies, usually mid-market and often sponsor-backed. Returns come from interest and fees, not exit.
The day jobs differ too
VC: sourcing-heavy, thesis-driven, lots of founder meetings, short memos, few large positions.
PE: diligence-heavy, model-heavy, complex closings, active portfolio management.
Private credit: underwriting-heavy, covenant-driven, continuous monitoring, downside focused.
How this shows up on the job
Careers do move across these. But the analytical muscles are different enough that most people specialise early. Try to internship in each if you can before committing.

Frequently asked questions
Which pays best at the analyst level?
PE typically pays highest, VC lowest, private credit in the middle. But the total-comp gap narrows at the senior level, especially in VC winners.
Which has the highest returns for LPs?
Historically PE and top-quartile VC. Private credit has lower absolute returns with lower volatility.
Which is easiest to break into?
Private credit and PE recruit heavily from banking. VC hires more variably including product and operator backgrounds.
Can I move between them?
Yes, but usually earlier in career is easier.
Is growth equity VC or PE?
It sits in between. Minority stakes but in profitable, scaling businesses.
