How to cite AI tools in an academic finance paper

    TL;DR

Treat an AI tool like any other source. Name the tool, the version, the date, what you asked it, and what it produced. Then verify the output against a primary source before using it.

Top layer firm systems that hold the source of truth.Firm systemsData room, IC memos, portfolio monitoring, LP reporting. No audit trail.

    The format that works everywhere

Most style guides (APA, Chicago, MLA) now cover AI. The common elements: tool name, developer, version or date, prompt (short), and a note in the methodology explaining how the output was used and verified.

Example: "AI assistant, generative model, response of 12 January 2026 to the prompt 'summarise the key risk factors described in the Form ADV Part 2A brochure for Adviser X'. Output verified against the Form ADV filing on SEC IAPD."

    What to verify

Any number, quote, citation, date or attribution. AI tools can produce confident-sounding false citations. This is the single most common way students get in trouble.

If a citation cannot be verified in a primary source, remove it.

How this shows up on the job

Institutional research memos already require this level of provenance. Getting into the habit at university means your first real memo already meets professional standards.

    How Reuben AI helps

Reuben AI records the data, the prompt and the reviewer for every output. Citing an output is a copy and paste of the provenance record. Students can start on the Free workspace.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I have to cite AI if it only helped brainstorm?

If it produced any text or analysis you kept, cite it. Brainstorming that produced nothing in the paper does not need a citation, but a footnote is safer.

Which style guide should I follow?

Whichever your professor requires. All the major ones now cover AI.

    Can I quote AI directly?

Yes, but sparingly, and always alongside the underlying primary source.

What if I used AI to check my grammar?

That does not usually require a citation, but disclose it in the methodology if in doubt.

    Is a hallucinated citation plagiarism?

No, but using it without checking is negligence. Both can fail you.
